A focus on renewal achieves a design response that quietly improves the experience of living in a house that’s already considered home.

Working largely within the existing footprint, rear living spaces are reimagined to create a home that is brighter, warmer and more connected to daily life.  The kitchen, meals and living areas have been reorganised to provide improved connection as an open plan, as well as to optimise the home’s relationship with the rear deck and garden, creating generous spaces for entertaining, family gatherings and everyday living.  

Throughout the day, natural light now fills the heart of the home, creating interiors that feel more inviting while reducing reliance on artificial lighting.  Larger openings improve both the physical and visual relationship between the living areas and the backyard, allowing parents to easily supervise children playing outdoors, while strengthening the sense that the garden forms part of everyday life.  

A detached studio provides a flexible retreat for teenagers.

Material selection and detailing reinforces the broader theme of renewal. Internally, a restrained palette of natural materials, soft textures and carefully considered detailing creates spaces that feel warm, calm and enduring.  Externally, timber cladding finished with a soft grey wash complements the existing home while sitting comfortably alongside the surrounding landscaping. The subtle finish allows the addition to feel settled and timeless, strengthening the connection between architecture and garden.

The outcome is a home that is more adaptable, more comfortable and better equipped to support family life for many years to come.
